As from 1st January 2010 it becomes a legal requirement that all livestock moving from farm to slaughter must be accompanied by a Food Chain Information declaration . Required by individual abattoirs, these forms are completed by the farmer prior to collection and subsequently accompany the animals to slaughter.

This document details the health status of the holding from which the animals are being sent and other information relevant to the to the safety of meat derived from the animals, including medicines that may have been administered to them. This procedure must be followed for each individual batch every time they go to slaughter. Failure to comply with the legislation may result in financial penalties being imposed on both producer and abattoir .
